A Florida school board voted late Monday night to keep the name of a Confederate general and early KKK member?

A Florida school board voted late Monday night to keep the name of a Confederate general and early KKK member?
This is so funny to me. Notice the only two to vote against the name is black. Why can't they just let it go. Talk about digging up the past. Do you think the name of the school should be changed? Honestly I had no idea who old dude was until I read the article here is a portion of it. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. รข€“ A Florida school board voted late Monday night to keep the name of a Confederate general and early Ku Klux Klan leader at a majority black high school, despite opposition from a black board member who said the school's namesake was a "terrorist and racist." After hearing about three hours of public comments, Duval County School Board members voted 5-2 to the retain the name of Nathan Bedford Forrest High School. The board's two black members cast the only votes to change the name. "(Forrest) was a terrorist and a racist," argued board member Brenda Priestly Jackson, who is black. Betty Burney, the board chairman and the board's other black member, also voted against retaining the name. "It is time to turn the page and get beyond where we are," she said. Time to turn the page? Why don't she just let it go. Why are black people intending on making everything racist. I think Malcom X and MLK were racist against white people but I guess that was okay. Why does it seem that if it racism against whites its okay but as soon as something remotely racist (really it wasn't until it was twisted around) against black or whatever other kind race all hell breaks loose. We can't help what is in the past but we can learn to get over it. The past is just that the past so I ask people to quit dwelling on slavery and the civil war its over people its a new age lets act like it.

I can understand not wanting to have the name of someone who hated your race on top of the buiding you go into every day. I think you would too if the roles were reversed. As a Northerner who moved (hopefully temporarily) to the South, I don't see this school as a unique institution. There's plenty of reminders of slavery here, some almost honored. It's very odd to me, especially since the African American population is somewhat large. I don't feel comfortable seeing all this, and I'm white.

2
You think it's bad now, I don't think it's going to improve soon. I can just imagine what tonight will bring, it won't be pretty no matter who wins. I do think though, that all this over exaggerated political correctness is going to come to an end. If Obama wins, that means that the highest office in the country is held by a "blacK" man, to me it will be hard to justify all this affirmative action crap. Maybe white folks could at least, once again, have = rights.

Nathan Bedford Forrest was one of the founders of the KKK. KKK being a Greek abbreviation of "The Unbroken Circle." He was involved with the KKK as a Confederate Veterans Association. Two years after it's beginnings Forrest left the KKK because of the radicals who had taken over and began spreading the violence known by the KKK. Forrest at the end of the War of Northern Aggression had written to his fellow Tennessee Vets that what ever differences were present before the war that they should be resolved and everyone treated as equal after the war. Forrest never supported violence toward anyone after the war. The name should remain with the school..

As for locations.... Orange Park is nice, but very busy (lots of traffic especially off of Blanding). Mandarin is the best area (it's just across the river from O.P.) in Jacksonville, very safe and probably closer to the schools making your commute about 20 minutes less than O.P. The zip codes in Mandarin are 32223, 32258, 32257 - to make it easier to find an apt. Another great area is Baymeadows. Avoid North or West Jacksonville, there are some not-so-safe neighborhoods. To find rental options, go to www.rent.com or www.move.com for your search. Hope this helps you, good luck with school!

Great list of apartments here http://jacksonville.cityzero.net/apartments.html

To be somewhat blunt, if these are your only two choices of law school then I would seriously consider another post-graduate route because this decision is one of which is the lesser of the two evils-- both are very poor law schools (4th tier), however if I had to go to one-- it would be the one offering showing me the money. If neither where offering me money then I honestly wouldn't attend because $30K per year on tuition at these schools is far too much for the quality of education that you will receive.

I live in jacksonville. Let me just give you a heads-up. Murder and crime are rampant in the city. this is our local news. So crime is high because there aren't enough cops. www.firstcoastnews.com you can check the daily happenings here. As far as neighborhoods, stay away from the westside, northside, downtown, and orange park away. There is actually a very small area that is acceptable, and that is the beaches area. There are some neighborhoods off of a road called Hodges. there is an excellent school there called Chets Creek. This would be your best bet. Another good school is Abess Park. Another one would be Twin Lakes Academy. Sabal Palm, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach are also good. This is the school board website. http://www.dreamsbeginhere.org/ You can see the school grades and mixture of students there. Here's another school website: http://www.greatschools.net/ you can compare schools here. If you want more info you can email me.

I might go to school in Jacksonville and I have heard mixed reviews about it. I heard it's a very large city but is it just a huge urban sprawl? Is there fun things to do there? City life? etc.

Its pretty cool, with the Jax Jaquars you have NFL games, so it can't be too bad. I love the Landing and the downtown area. The beaches are not bad and the weather is pretty good. I would live there. I used to live in Valdosta, GA for 5 yrs and frequented Jax for big city life. Clubs are pretty decent and there is plenty to do. Enjoy

Jacksonville is the most populous city in the state of Florida and the thirteenth most populous city in the United States. It is the county seat of Duval County.GR6 Since 1968, the city has shared a consolidated government with the county, making it the largest city in land area in the contiguous United States. In 2006, the city proper had an estimated population of 834,789 [1] with a metropolitan population of more than 1.3 million.[2] Jacksonville is the third most populated city on the East Coast, after New York City and Philadelphia. It is the central city of the Jacksonville, Florida, Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jacksonville is located in the First Coast region of northeast Florida. The city is situated on the banks of the St. Johns River, which flows north and empties into the Atlantic Ocean about 20 miles east of downtown. The settlement that became Jacksonville was founded in 1791 as Cowford due to its location at a narrow point in the river across which cattle were once driven. The city was renamed in 1822 for Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and eventual seventh President of the United States. A bronze sculpture of Jackson atop a steed stands downtown at the corner of Hogan and Water Streets. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacksonville

My brother lived there when he was stationed in the Navy and hated it. He described it as full of hicks - and we're talking backwoods straight out of "Deliverance" ones. They're also totally obsessed with their football team - McDonald's even named a burger after the quarterback.

6
Beach on one side. Interstate on the west side. Big rusting bridge in the middle. Lots of buildings, lots of houses, spread out really wide. Very flat. Looks like most other florida cities. FEW big buildings downtown. Mostly smaller buildings everywhere.

7
It is possibly the dullest large city in the Southern US. I cannot think of a single reason to get off of I-95 to visit it. The reason its citizens are so obsessed with their football team is that THERE IS NOTHING ELSE of interest about the place.

It would be a good idea to ask the school district if they have job openings and if they are permanent. My sister works in the Las Vegas school system and she says they are in constant need of qualified teachers, they pay exceptionally well and since the school system is growing in leaps and bounds you may want to try there.

2
I live in Florida and right now they are making serious cutbacks in the school systems, even talking about closing schools in some places. You really need to contact the county and see what they have to say

Orange Park is probably the best. Or Fleming Island, which is pretty much the best area of Orange Park. Its about 15 minutes away, has one of the best school districts in the state (believe me, I teach at a high school in the Clay County District, and its so much nicer, safer, and smarter than the other distrcts I have taught in). Its a simple drive... straight down Park Avenue for about 15 minutes and your at the base. A ton of people who live over here are in the navy, so your husband will be near some of his coworkers most likely. I'd definitely say Orange Park is the best. I really like the area. Mandarin is nice to, but its a little bit farther away. There are a ton of community colleges, and UNF nearby If you have any other questions, feel free to email me. I know the Jacksonville area by heart.

2
I'd mainly agree with the above answer, altho the drive to Mandarin isn't necessarily too bad depending on how quickly you can get to I-295. One area I'd definitely suggest NOT considering is Argyle Forest/Middleburg or anywhere else that would require taking the Blanding Blvd. exit off I-295. That whole corridor is really nasty just about any time but during rush hour it's traffic from hell.

If your sentenced to 3 years in Jacksonville Florida prison, due to a drug conviction-will you spend 3 years?
What I want to know is if your a young model Prisoner, do you get time off for good behavior, school & etc? Will he spend the whole 3 years there, or come home earlier?

if he is non-violent more than likely he will spend around 18 months in jail if it becomes way overcrowded and he wasn't a hard case being arrested or if guns was involved he might even spend around a year because many prison sometimes let non-violent offender's out early

2
Prisoners are being released early due to overcrowding. Nonviolent prisoners are favored.

3
have no idea of FL, most states automatically give good time, more good time if you work. In California, Non-violent Drug offenders are allowed to go to treatment instead of prison. But if a Bush is still Governor, chances are the only people to get a break are corporate thieves, conservative radio talk show hosts, (Rush) and Bankers.

4
I see people have given you the answer. I don't know the exact amount since it can change. I suggest that the person try to get into treatment or take advantage of their time. If the person has to be there they should make the most out of it so they can recover & prepare for a better life.

5
if your friend behaves like model prisoner, chances are they will get out early.

6
Every state has their own laws regarding "good time credits" and parole, but likely he will be released much sooner than 3 years. FL might have a web page like the one in Texas where you can go and see the release date of the offenders, look for it. http://168.51.178.33/webapp/TDCJ/index2.htm Try typing in a name, to see what I mean. Don't worry about date of birth or tdcj number or the sid number, just type in John Smith and see what you get. You will get 34 of them, some of who have already passed their projected release date, but when you click on the name it will tell you what the sentence is, and the date they are eligible to be released. Good Luck

Is there a school in Jacksonville, FL that offers an advanced certificate in graphic design?
I am moving Jacksonville within the next six months and need to find a reputable school that offers an advanced certificate in either graphic design or digital media arts for bachelor's degree graduate. I was going to start at a school where I am now however, plans have since changed and I will be moving. I have been looking at Florida State College's technical certificate programs and was wondering if anyone had any information or opinions on the school, or any other school for that matter. Thanks!

There aren't many boarding school in a city, so your combination of very good academics, good football team and in a city is a tall order. Are you familiar with Max Preps http://www.maxpreps.com/national/football.htm ? You can review prep football teams there. Of course, some schools have a long-term winning record, and others just have a good year because of a star player. Take a look at Milton Academy http://www.milton.edu/athletics/football.cfm which is just outside of Boston. There are no boarding schools in NYC, but Trinity Pawling http://www.trinitypawling.org/page.cfm?p=683&teamID=26 is close to a train to the city. I suspect the level of football is also good at Salisbury and Avon Old Farms. Take a look at Hotchkiss (countryside), Deerfield (countryside), and Blair (countryside, but buss access to NYC on weekends). While Choate is not known for football, it does have great academics and access to NYC by train. Don Bosco in NJ has a consistently great football team. However, it is a day school. You might call the school to find out if they offer the possibility of boarding with local families. To identify more football schools, you can google some of the better-known sports leagues -- ISL, Ericson, Founders and MAPL. Good luck!

Katie, I don't know the answer to that, but go to the website for cable show for make up artists and ask them were the great schools are, or how they learned. I'd be willing to bet most of them bought loads of make up and practiced endlessly on their friends. I searched several cable channels to see if I could find the name of it, but I couldn't. It's on TV now, but it's a reality show that is going to end in the next one or two weeks, so ask around and see if you can find it. It will still have a website with contestants bios, but if you see the show it's a great education in the broad scope of make up. Another show to look into is "What Not To Wear." Their make up artist, Carmody, could tell you about schools she knows about, too. There in Florida you might go to cosmetology schools to see who teaches the most about make up. It's not a seperate course in most states, but if you have to take the full course, but don't want to do any hair dressing or fingernail work, it's a great introduction to the things you can use to support your work in make up. and you wouldn't have to get your license, either. Those schools might know of make up schools, too. Ask around.
