What is life like in Jacksonville, FL?

What is life like in Jacksonville, FL?
Looking at moving out to Florida for school, there are three locations I could go to. I just want to know the type of people there, nightlife, the vibe/energy, basically anything you want to tell me about it. All info is appreciated.

Jacksonville is literally the largest city in terms of area in the continental US (over 800 square miles) so there's a LOT of variation. If you have specific questions, drop me a line.

3
The people here down-to-Earth, not too Southern but not too Northern folks who are generally hospitable. Alot of ties to the military here. Also many immigrants the Philippines, South America, and Bosnia. Nightlife is pretty good, you just have to ask around once you get here. The most notable is Club Paris which Paris Hilton famously opened here a couple years back yet failed to show for the grand opening. As said above, Jacksonville is a largely spaced out city, you will need a vehicle. Despite that there are many communities with bike trails. The outdoors are beautiful and there are plenty of parks. We are a river city (the only one in the world that flows from South to North besides the Nile) and a beach city. There are always events and something to do, partially because of the University of North Florida, Jacksonville University, and Florida Coastal Law School. Any more questions, just drop a line. :)

What chance do I have at being accepted to the following colleges?

What chance do I have at being accepted to the following colleges?
- Purdue University - University of Central Florida - University of North Florida - Jacksonville University - University of South Florida - Penn State - Rutgers University - Pace University I'm a sophomore in high school My cumulative GPA is 3.1 I got a 19 out of 32 on the Practice ACT test I am from New Jersey And I go to technical school, which is mainly for students with special needs I am only there because I have ADHD and my school in my town is horrible and on the ghetto side

A 19 on the ACT. That is extremely low. And will not get you into Purdue, Penn, Rutgers. You will need a 24+ for U of F Gainsville. You still have plenty of time to retake the ACT. Take it twice more. study for it. Almost all students do better when the take it again.

2
Being a Sophomore you have plenty of time to get your GPA and test scores up. First, colleges look for GPA trends, so if you can get your GPA up above a 3.5 for the next several semesters that would help a lot. To get into the schools above you will likely need that high of a GPA. ADHD Sucks, go get medication and start forcing yourself to study more. Second your ACT score is low, but at the same time you are only a sophomore and the ACT is meant to test what you've learned in highschool, so given that you are not even half way through high school your score isn't that bad. You need to start studying, if you get your ACT score to at least a 25 you will have a much better chance of getting into those schools. Your most realistic school would be Rutgers as they have the lowest admission's standards. going out of state is really expensive, so if money is a concern Rutgers would be your best goal.

How to get a pilot license?

How to get a pilot license?
I live in Jacksonville Florida and have been considering a pilot license to possibly start a career down the road. Where would be a good place to start? I see so many different schools and all offer so much but how do I know they are actually a good school? Would I be better off taking lessons in a small town and then advance to another big school to finish? And to get me started, what literature would you recommend me starting to read like "pilot 101"?

Go over to Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport, see Sean. He can answer all your questions and provide you with an Instructor as well. Top Shelf outfit!

2
Go to your local airport and go for a trial flight. This should be the first step that you should take - this way you will find out if you like it and want to continue to learn how to fly. If so, then there are a variety of ways you can get there, and the instructor that takes you for a trial flight will be able to tell you more about aviation, and answer all of your questions. The next step you take, if you discover that you want to be a pilot, is to begin training. In the opening stages of your training you will be introduced to how to fly an aircraft (eg. how the controls work, and how to fly the basics). As you progress, your training will continue to introduce you to more and more complicated maneuvers, until you learn how to land a plane. Part way through this training you should begin to study PPL (private pilots license) exams such as Radio, Navigation, Law, etc. You will need to pass all the six PPL exams, and obtain over 50 hours worth of flight experience. You will need to be at least 16 years of age to go solo, and at least 17 years old to gain a PPL (and have the previous requirements). Generally, once you learn how to land and takeoff, and you are at least 16, your instructor will let you go solo. You must accumulate a certain number of solo hours to gain a PPL. Also, if you have at least 50 or more hours (some dual and some solo) and have passed all your exams, and are 17 years old plus have obtained a Medical (this should be obtained prior to going solo) you can be issued with a PPL. This means you now have a license that allows you to fly an aircraft whenever you like and take up to 9 passengers. If this is as far as you want to go, then that will be enough to just enjoy flying as a hobby. However, a PPL will not let you work as a pilot for a career or accept money in return for a flying service. To make a career or job as a pilot, you will need a Commercial Pilots License (CPL). A CPL requires you to take more advanced training then you would have had during your PPL training. You will learn more advanced flying skills, need to pass CPL exams, be at least 18 years old, have a Class 1 Medical certificate, and have at least 200 hours worth of flight experience. Whether a PPL or CPL pilot, you can gain what is known as a rating. These ratings can allow you to fly more sophisticated aircraft and allow you to do more then usual. For example, a Night Rating allows you to fly at night, an Instrument Rating allows you to fly in cloud and bad weather, a Multi-Engine Rating allows you to fly twin engine aircraft, a Turbine Engine Rating will allow you to fly jet engine aircraft such as airliners (Boeing 737/747s etc), an Instructor Rating (C-Cat, B-Cat or A-Cat amd must have a CPL) will allow you to work as an instructor, and so on. To gain a rating, you will need to sit a theory exam and undergo some training. A CPL still only lets you fly up to 9 passengers, however you can make money. With a C-Cat you can have a career as a pilot in the following; Topdressing, Charter flights, Scenic, Instructor, Aerobatic, Small airline, parachute dropper, glider towing and so on. However, if you want to become an airline pilot, you will need an Airline Transport Pilots License (ATPL). An ATPL will allow you to become an airline pilot (so fly any number of passengers). To get an ATPL you will have to pass certain exams, and must have an instrument rating. Certain airlines also prefer you to have other ratings (such as night ratings and turbine engine/multi-engine ratings). Also you must be at least 21 years of age, and have at least 1500 hours worth of flight experience. However, it is always a good idea to have a much larger amount of hours then this before applying to work for an airline company.

Hello Soacar - Our friend Lucas is from UK, so some of the info is a little different if you train in Jacksonville, FL under FAA (US) regulations - the ATP in US requires 23 of age. And flight instructors (CFI in US) are single engine, multiengine or instruments - Also in USA, there is no limit as to number of passengers - In the US - the complete training from scratch to CPL and Instructor would be close to $50,000 and can take close to 18 months. All schools prepare you for written exams and flight tests. With a "best school" you just pay more money for the same license - The hardest thing is to get the first job, at the time you have no experience. There are numerous schools in Florida. My best advice would be that you complete a 4 year college degree (required by airlines in the US) then serve in the military (Air Force, Navy) as pilot, to avoid the expensive training, and get the jet experience preferred by airlines to consider you -

I am looking for a book I read as a child and I don't know the title or author.?
The book was about a little girl who I think was in a coma. She was on her fathers whaling ship and he nurses her back to health feeding her whale fat. I think that Nantucket was in the name or in the book. I read this book when I was in the 8th grade, I checked it out in the library at an Irish Catholic school I attended in Jacksonville, Florida. I believe it was an older book. I am 41 years old today.

Do you think I could make it to a division-1 school?

Do you think I could make it to a division-1 school?
Okay, so I'm a sophomore in high school and I play varsity football, I play left tackle and defensive end. I do not start, but I am a shoe-in for the starting left tackle position next year, because both of our starting offensive tackles on the roster are seniors. But even though I do not start I get a lot of quality playing time, and I have pretty good size (6'4', 235), and I my weight room skills are pretty good also, but need a little improvement (my max bench is 295, and I can hit 225, 10 times) my legs are my strength though, leg press is around 950, and power clean is around 245. I'm asking this because at our game last night I talked to a scout from Jacksonville University, I live in Jacksonville, Florida, and he wrote down my name and home phone number, and told me that I would be hearing from him again soon and he looked forward to seeing my next two years of football. So I was thinking, if I'm getting this kind of recognition as a sophomore, if I keep up the work in the weight room and on the field do you think I can earn a D-1 scholarship. My O-line coach says he would like to see me gain at least 30-40 pounds, which is going to be hard considering I've all ready gain 25 pounds in my first two years, but it is something i am extremely passionate about and willing do anything for. So, my question to you is, being blessed with great size, a strong work ethic, and intelligence, do you think I could earn a full-ride division-1 scholarship? Honestly, I really do not appreciate some jackass that has nothing better to do with his life than try to call people out on their lies over the internet trying to tell me that I'm lying. I know what happened, and I'm incredibly serious about pursuing football. He has not actually contacted me, he simply wrote down my name and number, for what reason, I don't know. I am not familiar with what does or doesn't violate NCAA rules for recruiting, but if you what say is true, then maybe he was writing down a name for future reference. But, I really don't see how you can say the weight room doesn't matter either, because if a high school player goes to a UF combine, for example, and they can't bench a single rep at 225, Florida would no longer be interested, especially for an offensive lineman. With that said, I am extremely serious about football, and I would love to see it take me to college and possibly even the NFL one day, and don't have to believe me, but I know the truth.

YES!!!

Not if you keep lying about your stats, you phony and about who you talked to last night. Colleges are FORBIDDEN to make personal contact with players until September 1 of their senior year. There is no such thing as a college scout. A real football player would know how to get recognized by a recruiter. And, colleges follow the rule because violation is SEVERE. So you're lying. I doubt if you were ever even in a weight room or ever played football. Anyone who was, would know weight stats, which you think are everything, do nothing to get you a scholarship. You have to be a good football player to get a scholarship.

Moving to San Marcos California. Need information?
Im looking to move out to san marcos california in July 2011 and attend palomar college. Im currently a senior in high school in jacksonville florida. I was wondering what rents were out there and job oppurtunities. And if anyone knows of a way I could talk to people that might be going to that school that might be looking for roomates. All help is greatly appreciated!

Work opportunities are not good for California at all. That being said, there are a lot of potential retail places in San Marcos as well as restaurants etc where you might be able to get a job. Sounds like you plan ahead which is great. Can you get a job now in Florida and then transfer out? I know Starbucks does that. I am not sure which restaurants there are in Florida or retail stores that might offer the same. As far as a roommate, you could look at the link below. Also to get ideas for rent, look on Craigslist San Diego and then search by San Marcos for more infor. http://roommate.csusm.och101.com/main_root.html

San Marcos is in north San Diego County. It is not a huge community, but big enough. It can get crowded on Highway 78, which is the freeway which runs east-west, connecting San Marcos to Escondido to the East & Vista, Oceanside & Carlsbad to the West. San Marcos does get congested in the area around Palomar College, but there are lots of businesses, stores & restaurants in the area. If I were you, I would try to move in June so that you can find employment before school starts. I don't know if school starts in August or September at Palomar, but many schools start in August. It has been too many years since I myself graduated from Palomar, so I am not current on when school starts. Average rent for an apartment can run anywhere from $750-2000 per month, depending upon the size & nature of the place you are renting. Average studio apartments are going to be around $750, & a 1-bedroom is around $1000 per month average. Prices go up from there. These are just averages, & you will find prices lower or higher, but these prices are about what you can expect in most areas of San Diego County, unless you are living in more expensive neighborhoods such as Carlsbad, LaJolla, downtown San Diego, Rancho Bernardo, and others. What I would suggest is to see about a roommate to share an apartment with, in order to cut down on expenses. I would stay away from Craig's List to find a roommate, as I have heard horror stories of fraudulent posters who place ads & get financial information & scam people on roommate/rental listings. Plus, it can be a bit sketchy. One thing you can do is to contact the college's Student Services office (or whatever it is called now) & ask if they have roommate listings or how they would suggest you find a roommate. Another thing you can do is if you belong to a church, locate a church in your denomination in the San Marcos, Escondido or Vista areas (the closest areas to Palomar College) to see if they will allow you to post in their church bulletin or online classifieds (many churches have online classifieds) an advertisement for a roommate or to see if they know of someone who is looking to rent a room. I would start with the college first though. I think that would be your best bet.

Is there anyway for Apple Computers to donate a few laptops to a public school?
I am a student at Twin Lakes Middle in Duval County in Jacksonville, Florida. I have technology as an elective and the only video and audio editing software we have are old Windows computers. email Apple, Bill Gates just donated another 340 million dollars to help fund disease research, surely he can spare a few thousand on some puters

2
Email Steve Jobs of Apple. He's the CEO there. He might just send your school some apple pc units.

3
let's look at this from a marketing point of view. why would ANYONE give out stuff for free? 1. pure charity - cuz they care about you. this doesn't happen a lot, but u do hear about them. 2. public image - rich people do this a lot. it makes them look good among their rich friends, plus it's always nice to be appreciated by a whole lot of people. 3. tax write off - this is usually why people donate stuff; combined with reason #2... Although it's worth a try, writing to Steve Jobs isn't likely going to get you the donation you want. Especially if you are only looking for a couple dozen computers. Imagine Jobs saying, "I gave some high school $20,000 worth of computers last week" and Gates saying "I gave xxx million dollars to xxx research..." You can try convincing your school to get a public funding for new equipments, or work out a deal with Apple to replace all of the computers in your school with Apple products. Be sure to let them know what your school can do in return. (ie. publicity, advertising, more apple users, ect...) Also, if one of your friends' got a rich uncle who doesn't mind being praised on the local news paper....

4
Why not work with what you have? 90% of editing should be done with simple cuts or crossfades. By sticking with the basics you minimize the amount of rendering that needs to be done and you distract the audience less by not having special transitions and effects. Don't forget, you want the audience to become so engaged by the story you as the editor/director/camera operator are telling that they forget they are watching tv. If you have basic editing software, use it to it's fullest to get your story across. Remember, it only takes a camera and the internet to reach the world, and a good story to change it! Michael Jordan wasn't the greatest basketball player of all times because he had the best shoes. He had the fundementals, athletic ability and drive to be the best. You don't need a full on avid to be the best storyteller in the world. You need to know the fundementals of a good story, and the drive to see that story get told. Tony

What does this mean? [Florida truancy laws]?

What does this mean? [Florida truancy laws]?
I'm 17 and due to transportation problems and a medical emergency, I've been absent or late to school, a lot. I my own car now, so it won't be a problem next year :) I got a letter addressed to the general population of students who are excessively absent saying that I could fail because of the absenses but that the failing grade could be "appealed" with the attendance board" and if the parent "doesn't participate in the activites reqested(... by Sep. 15th [my guess when school starts for me again]) ... and the absenses are still an issue... legal action may be initiated without further notice". So does it mean that if I don't see the attendence board my mom gets in trouble or does it mean by next school year if my absences from this year aren't accounted for I'll get in trouble, or what. Here is the website for what i found about the legal req's. for school truancy for my county: http://www.jacksonvillecriminallawyerblog.com/2008/05/jacksonville_florida_parents_a.html My real question is, since I'm 17 and the law only requires children 6-16 go to school, if I was absent will my mom still get in trouble legally. sorry for the lengthy-ness. thx :]

If the law only requires ages 6-16 to attend school and you are 17 then neither you nor your mother can get in "trouble."

2
Without consulting an attorney...your situation is "iffy"...were you 16 or 17 when you had all the absences? It applies to how old you were when the "offenses" occurred...not how old you are now... Do you have legitimate medical excuses for those days that qualify as medical emergencies (or hospital, or Dr bills showing you were treated and for what...)..a lot depends on your age AT THE TIME IN QUESTION... You sound like a smart kid...your post was well written and your use of grammar, etc. was great...(so often not, with kids your age on here!)... Consult with either an attorney or a counselor at school for answers to your question....

3
Even though state law only requires 6-16 yo must attend school, if you are "enrolled" in school you must abide by the local school board rule book issued to each student. you have several choices. 1. Attend school and abide by the rules. 2. Drop out of school and become a burden on society. 3. Ride the school bus. 4. Walk to school. 5. ..or be found to be a habitual truant student and face the reaper--including said parents.

Regardless of what you're doing. You can't just give up on your dream. If it's something you really want, you need to go for it.

Since you are under 18, MAKE SURE YOUR PARENTS ARE INVOLVED! You need a Talent Agent to get serious auditions. To get an agent, you need to get GREAT headshots, a good resume, and training from the best. These are enough to get you a commercial agent at least. Getting a GOOD theatrical agent (Film/tv) takes longer. Most good theatrical agents wonรข€™t see you unless youรข€™re SAG, have a polished resume, and a demo reel. Commercial agents are more lenient about that. What the best Commercial agents want to see on your resume are good commercial classes, improv, and cold reading. You can get an agent multiple ways. Here are a few common ways: -Mail in an unsealed manilla envelope with a CONCISE coverletter and headshot with the resume stapled on the back. If you have a demoreel include that too. -Attend a showcase and impress them. By showcase I do not mean scammy conventions like IMTA, IPOP, Proscout, or Best New Talent. I mean legit ones like at Actor Connection, Reel pros, Network Studios, etc. -Get a referral from a friend who is with the agency that youรข€™re interested in DONรข€™T -Email them unless they tell you to. ITรข€™S UNPROFESSIONAL! -Call unless they tell you to. ALSO UNPROFESSIONAL! -Walk in and ask for a meeting. UNPROFESSIONAL THREE! -Sign with them if they ask for upfront money, make you take new photos with THEIR photographer, or take THEIR classes. Agentรข€™s ONLY make money when you do. Agents usually make 10% on film/tv and commercials and 20% on commercial print. For the agent interview, be yourself. The agents want to know your personality. Create a conversation with him or her. If you're in the room for at least 45 minutes, they like you. Also, be prepared to have a monologue or two. Better yet, if you have a good scene you can ask the agent to read the other part with you. Look up LEGIT agencies here: http://www.agentassociation.com/ http://www.sag.org/content/find-agent Sample Resume: http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww80/ELDORADO59/scan0002.jpg Avoiding BAD Headshots: http://bbs.backstage.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8011031/m/110106342

You can go call or just visit movie production studios for auditions. I live in Greenwood Florida and it's nowhere from tallahassee and pensacola so I can use their airports for transportation. I don't know that much about agents and acting agencies. But to let you know I audition for a movie named Battle Los Angeles that has been filming since the begining of September but I lost the part to Lucas Til. If you really are into acting you should really call the movie studio that is in charge of the movie you want to be in. Also call the studios and ask for audition dates for the characters!!!

less humid: Jacksonville could be anyone's opinion but i would prefer Jacksonville Austin is beating Hot in the summer, i have never been to Jacksonville but i would say Jacksonville is better to play in umm i would say Jacksonville if you dont really like the heat.

2
Austin Is Less Humid Florida & Texas Are both Hot Beds of Great Football Players. Texas

3
Texas is less humid and therefore not feel quite as hot. Florida is REALLY humid and it feels like its over 100 all the time. I would say austin texas

4
Well, in austin it seems like you're breathing the same hot humid air in september that you were in june, jacksonville at least has sea breezes that make it cooler in my opinion. But thats summer. During school, austins temps can range from twenties to nineties, jacksonville seems to be pretty constantly mild, so it would be nicer, unless youre a snow person.

5
You should come to Jacksonville...on top of playing football, you can watch JAGUARS GAMES and arena football Sharks

6
Austin has the higher ambient temperatures - in summer, not that unusual to hit triple digits. Jacksonville is a rarity to hit 100, but 90s are frequent and high humidity is the norm - however, these are somewhat mitigated by the fairly-constant sea breezes. Wintertime, Jacksonville is probably more comfortable...parts of Texas can get really cold and snowy, while JAX seldom fails to at least make it into the 40s during the day and snow is a once-in-a-decade occurrance. Football is probably fairly miserable in both spots during training and the first month or so of the season - conditions in Jacksonville approach ideal in November and December. Enjoymentwise, tough to say, but Jacksonville has a fairly active entertainment scene and all the big tourist attractions are within a couple of hours drive.

Jacksonville is better, and besides its in Florida, Florida has great weather from what ive heard just a random thing: Houston, Texas would be the worst place to play, its humid AND hot on top of each other its like you can feel peoples sweat in the air its disgusting

college and high school dual enrollment question?

college and high school dual enrollment question?
Right now i'm a junior in high school and I've been taking college courses at a Florida State College at Jacksonville, I've been taking three classes each semester since the summer before my junior year. When it comes to the summer before my senior year, I will only have 5 courses to take before I get my AA. I was wondering if I took 5 classes that summer and got my AA before I started my senior year, if I could still take college classes during my senior year while they're free?

HMMM i wonder....

2
HEY! I'm an Early College (at Lee) graduate who got an AA degree from FSCJ. First off, I would not recommend 5 classes for the summer, that load is way too big. I would highly recommend spreading out your classes all the way to your Spring Senior semester so there is no issue with financing. I kind of doubt that they will pay for it since the purpose of the program is to get an AA degree and nothing else.

Joining a school of arts?

Joining a school of arts?
When I was in 6th grade, I wanted to join the Lavilla School of the arts, but got accepted into James Weldon Johnson College Prep. I attended jwj for 2 years, becofre going back to a regular school Now for my upcoming highschool year, I would Like to join Douglas Anderson school of the arts in Jacksonville florida for dance. I took dance at age 5, in ballet, but have since quit. Would it be a good idea to join an arts school in the area of dance, if i have no previous experiance? Its a regular highschool too, it just focuses more on arts like singing, design, theatre and dance.

Right now the economy/market is SATURATED with WAY TOO MANY Legal Professionals. ("Legal Professionals" includes, but is not limited to: Attorneys/Lawyers, Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc.) So even IF you finish your studies, you are going to have a VERY difficult time finding a job - the market in the field of Law is fierce. Law schools do not tell their students the truth >that the market/economy is SATURATED! A law student is easy money for a law school. Suggestion: Consider and look into the field of HEALTHCARE! <this is where the jobs are! (even with your background) and scholarships! Good luck.

Does anyone have information on Jacksonville, Fl. Schools, neighboorhoods and such?
I am 14, my mother and I are moving to Jacksonville from Michigan next year. We were looking at Wolfson High and homes in San Jose or Baymeadows. I want to know what the schools are like, how good the neighborhoods are. If it is a safe place, and some other good places in Florida.

Neighborhood schools in Jacksonville suck big time! Now magnet schools (look at webite below if you don't know what it is) are good but you have to apply for a lottery and be drawn to be accepted. Yeah, it's kinda safe around Jacksonville. Areas around Wolfson are pretty safe, and it's a nice area as far as homes and people. E-mail me to learn more

Move to Florida!

2
I would say move to Fla but north fla gets winter too. Stay in NY where the people are much cooler

3
Im a new yorker and 23..Though i LOVE nyc i wish i can leave. My opinion its very easy to get stuck here as an adult. Go to florida its so nice there!

4
Haha florida is sweet, lived here 14 years and still counting :)

5
Move your little butt to Florida,, As quick as you can.

6
move to florida, im tired and poor living in nyc. too crowded and can never find any parking because traffic cops chase me. i dont know why manhattan restaurants charge 8 bucks for a salad and leaves. i dont have any money to have fun here.

7
I can't believe your parents are putting everything on your shoulders. While it is great that they are including you in the decision, they also need to take the lead here. Your parents need to evaluate this as adults. The entire family's needs and wants must come into focus. I hope you trust your parents enough ( and I hope they are responsible enough) to know what is best. If they do not decide--follow your heart, and realize that a decision of this magnitude should not be left to you at this age---no matter what happens, you have done as best as you can. You will be OK.

8
If someone offered me a free place to live in Florida I still wouldn't go. I think it's a very strange state and just don't like it. Other then Miami there is little to no culture. Although college towns have some. I so much prefer NY. here you get exposed to new things and new people every time you step outside your door. If you want to see anything new in Fla. you need to drive. My vote is NY. But i do agree it shouldn't be on your shoulders. You parents should make the decision that is best for the family in the long run.

9
stay in NYC. when you look back on it years later, you won't regret it. my parents did the same thing (move out of NYC), but i stayed in my school in Manhattan. part of your high school experience in NYC will be to meet all kinds of diverse people and be able to do all kinds of cultural stuff like visit museums and go to concerts and shows, and i bet that you will NOT get that kind of diversity and cultural life in Florida. when i was in high school, we always had special student discount tickets to all kinds of concerts and Broadway shows. besides, there's only one season in Florida: hot. at least here you have all four seasons. i wouldn't trade that for anything.

10
Ugh NO!!!!!!!!! I used to live in Manhattan then my mom got married to my step dad and he relocated to St. Augustine ( on Ponce De Leon Blvd) and now I live in boring Jacksonville, but im moving back back in three weeks. Stay in NY!! Everything you love with be gone, nothing is open 24 seven and life is so much slower and theres less to do unless you like chillin by the pool and the beach 24/7. Forget the warm weather! NYC gets warm too in the summer, and you cant wear something that you could walk around 5th Ave on down here like you could up there without getting weird stares from people (like wearing a scarf in the summer). If I got the chance to go back, I would have gone begged to stay. But its ultimately up to you, are you a culture, fashionperson, or a beach and chill person.

Transfer from British College to American High School..?

Transfer from British College to American High School..?
Hi, me and my Cousin are at College in England, I am seventeen, she is sixteen, we are looking to move to America (Jacksonville, Florida) thus entering Junior year of American High School, how can we go about finding a School that would take us at such stage and then applying for Visas, finding accommodation and actually moving etc. Also, as we are under 18 but under British law, allowed to emigrate, will we need a 'guardian' in Jacksonville or will we be permitted to live alone? Also will we be allowed to obtain an American Driving License? And would we be able to work in Jacksonville being of American School Age? I'm sure I'll think of more questions at some point lol, any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you x also, we already have various qualifications, mainly GCSEs, though our grades aren't exactly fantastic, would this be a contributing factor to our transfers?

I'm not sure, but you could probably get a lot of answers here: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis

First, understand that I'm working under my own assumptions, (I live in a different state) but as far as United States, I do believe that you need to prove to a Judge in US Court to be legally responsible for yourself and your cousin (you'll need to prove income, intentions for coming to the US, and other legal matters). Here, if a minor (under the age of 18) wants to apply for an apartment (which I'm assuming you will try to move into?) you will need help from the courts to apply. Our school system is set up in districts, if you live in a certain district, you will be placed in a certain school no questions asked (public schooling is not the same as your public schooling, it is a general admittance and our "private schooling" is "public schooling" in the UK... confusing, I know) If you want a certain high school, I added a link to Jacksonville Fl high schools that I Googled. Also, go to a government building in your area to get further information regarding visas and driving licenses. Good luck with everything, and don't forget: our drinking age doesn't start till 21! :)

3
Basically, you cannot without going through an exchange student program (such as AFS or YFU) OR finding a family to become your guardians while in the U.S (even then, a high school can refuse you). The high school will not admit you. Pretty simple -- forget this idea. You will be much better off waiting until you are in the university -- then none of the above problems will apply. In neither case, would you be able to work in the U.S. EXCEPT on a university campus for a few hours a week.

Moving to Jacksonville FL, I have some questions?
I'm thinking about moving to jacksonville florida to go back to school and start my life, but i have some questions. (I'm coming from a very small town so bear with me here.) Is it very densely populated, like NYC, or is it a little more spread out? also i'm thinking about bringing my car, would this be a good idea? is driving a hassle through the city? is parking a problem there? what are some nice areas to live in the city? I will be attending the Jacksonville Community College, are there any nice neighborhoods to live around there? also what is there to do for fun for a 21 year old guy in Jacksonville? I'm going down to visit but not for a few months so i just want to get an idea of what it is like.

Looks like I come to the rescue... Jacksonville, is a HUGE city and is most def. spread out. You can drive in Jacksonville for one hour and still be in jax. Def. bring your car, see above LOL. But if you're willing to bear the really long city bus rides, go ahead Driving shouldn't really be a hassle. It's a pretty straightforward city. And try not to drive in rush hour. It's Florida Community College at Jacksonville (FCCJ) and they have 4 campuses and a couple smaller centers...it is impossible to tell you the neighborhoods on those.

ahh you madcap alien you. you should let that miss south carolina learn him about geography.

2
He'll learn soon enough. Get those donuts!

3
if he were mine, i would show him a globe. show him where china is, where jax is and explain that there are alot of cities in between..

4
Buy one those kids maps and show him where Jacksonville Florida is and then show him where China is and then show him other places in relation to them. Or you could buy a kid's globe and try that also, or take him somewhere that has one, like a science museum or children's museum. Young kids like that are very stubborn and sometimes won't believe you until they see it visually. Are you going on a trip out of town this summer? That would help him as well, even if it's a day trip to a nearby town.

5
Just do like most dad's and let him learn everything in the school yard. You could teach him how to drink and shotgun a beer before he is 7

6
Draw a map of earth with crullers. Jelly-filled make great volcanoes.

7
Your 5 year old could well be right. You two just hang out with the donuts. I wish I could hang out with you. Sounds like you both have great fun. Enjoy every second of your 5 year old's company. Children grow up too fast these days. God bless you both.

8
Sure, that should be an easy one for the teacher to cover after she's done explaining how her "dad" is actually a transvestite, and not a man with abnormally soft skin and 36C's.

9
He needs to be learning how to lift skirts for peeks and such...leave the map crap to a trained professional.

10
There are plenty of disappointments out there in the world.... hang & eat donuts ... let the Teacher be the Heavy.

Most, or dare I say, all High Schools in Jacksonville have block schedule, each day 4 classes, equaling 8 classes in total. However, because of the budget cuts, and the classes that they are cutting, they are still deciding on the schedule for next year. From what I hear, we might get out of school an hour earlier, so we might have 7 classes. But as or right now, most schools are offering 8 classes to students, 4 each day. Just to name a few schools in Jacksonville would be Stanton, Forrest, Ed White, Paxon, Douglas Anderson...

Being an MA requires you to be good at math. You'll have to do calculations all the time. So becoming an MA as a way to avoid math is not an option. So why not do both? You can take the GED test without taking the classes. And I'm sure your MA class will have a math course. So why not schedule a GED test about the time you complete your MA course?

I want to major in International Relations and possibly even go for my Master's Degree. I'm mostly just wondering what university would be better suited for me. I'm from Jacksonville, Florida which is about an hour and a half away from UF. Other than the fact that it's the top FL school I want to go to, it's also one of the closest to my house (other than the Jacksonville colleges, of course). Though I'm very into the politically scene and I would LOVE to try to intern for a Congress member or even at the White House.

For a graduate program, GWU hands down. But for your undergraduate, you really ought to consider how much it will cost and how much debt you want to have when you leave college. UF is an excellent school - go there.

With your plans to go to school, plus get an apartment, would be tough at your age. Possibly you could get some room mates to help with the rent. I've seen too many kids get a car loan with parents co-signing the loan, default when expenses got too rough and the parents get stuck with the bill. You've seen the news where the federal government is bailing out banks that loan money to people who couldn't pay the loan. I really doubt anyone is going to give an 18 year old a car loan. Save your money and do the cash car thing untill you're older and can build some credit. Sam's Club or Walmart credit card would be my first choice for a credit card. Remember to pay the bill in full each month, the interest is really high. Good luck

I am very positive that regardless of your status in georgia you will still be required to retest in florida. The same for me if i decide to teach in florida after being certified here in georgia

2
I would contact the Florida Department of Education and find out straight from them what you would need to do in order to teach in that state. Every state has different requirements of teachers coming from another state, so the best bet would be to go straight to the Dept. of Education. If you go to this link, you should be able to find some information to help, or at least find someone to contact. http://www.fldoe.org/educators/ Good luck!

3
As a general rule, teaching certifications are not transferable between states, since every state has its own criteria. I'd suspect you'll have to retest.

4
A license in one state is not valid in another state. The one exception is when the states have reciprocal agreements, Check that out with the Florida state department of education./

Traveling to Jacksonville Florida... HELP!?!?

Traveling to Jacksonville Florida... HELP!?!?
I have freshman orientation July 2nd and 3rd for the University of North Florida. I found a reasonably priced fight: https://www.orbitz.com/Secure/ViewFlightInformation?retrieveParams=true&z=4d76&r=1m0&z=4d78&r=1m2&lastPage=interstitial.... but that only gets me to the airport. I don't have much money and want to keep this as cheap as possible. I tried getting in touch with someone at the school to give me advice about transportation and such... but haven't heard back! I don't want to use a cab for the trip from the airport to the school because of cost-- but I can't seem to find a bus or shuttle or track-line that goes to the school! HELP PLEASE! I'm about ready to cry from frustration and shock at the price-tag attached to all this. And the school's not really being any help either (they won't even let me stay in the dorm room over night!)

There is a shuttle bus from the airport that should get you to the central downtown terminal for just a couple of bucks. http://www.jtafla.com/Schedules/showPage.aspx?Sel=155 From there, you can pick up the SS-6 bus to UNF for another buck or so. http://www.jtafla.com/Schedules/showPage.aspx?Sel=159 A relatively-inexpensive place to stay for a while is the InTown Suites on Beach Blvd - it's a 2-mile drive but a doable mile or so walk from the northern edge of UNF. http://www.intownsuites.com/detail_hotel.asp?id=71 This will show you the InSuites location...UNF is just to the SE. http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Jacksonville&state=FL&address=11451+Beach+Blvd&zipcode=32246-3805&country=US&latitude=30.28703&longitude=-81.52382&geocode=ADDRESS

Well, the guy above is wrong...but he does have some good info The whole trip will take only two dollars (1 to downtown and 1 to UNF) 1. Take the CT-3 to downtown (the first link is the bus schedule) 2. Get off at the downtown station (Rosa Parks Station) and take the R-5 to UNF Note: There are two R-5 stations, one with a yellow sign (Murray Hill) and one with a green sign (Regency/UNF). Take the one with the green sign http://www.jtafla.com/Schedules/showPage.aspx?Sel=145 3. Be careful of mixing up the Weekday and Weekend schedules 4. the trip from downtown to UNF is complete hell..you're on the bus for like an hour...bring something to do haha Your link was expired so i couldn't really see when you would land in jacksonville

I by all means support the millitary however you must think about the fact that young males from all over the country are recruited and brought to Jacksonville creating more competition for me. Jacksonville is so big that you really don't see military people that often in some areas. Besides they are usually on base or out at sea. If you go out by the shore (Jax, Neptune, and Atlantic beach) there are a lot of young good looking women.

What can I train for in less then a year to get a good paying job

What can I train for in less then a year to get a good paying job?
I just graduated from high school in jacksonville florida and I do not want to go to college, What are some professions I should look into that I could train for and get a relatively good paying job.(10-15 dollars an hour full time)

If it's your interest, technical schools usually can train people in less than a year for a multitude of subjects. It's quicker than apprenticeships and the pay is pretty good starting, and jobs are not going to leave anytime soon for autobody/automotive, diesel, welding, etc. Wages are pretty good, a good experienced diesel tech can grab +/- $75,000/year. I think Universal Technical Institute has a campus in FL.

2
try union apprentice programs, electricians make a good salary and benefits package. and you get paid while your learning.

3
I see two questions in your post so I will answer them accordingly. The first is regarding college and all I will say is that you are making a wise decision not to go to college until you are ready for it. Its an expensive proposition and there is a benefit to maturing a little bit and understanding your interests before diving right in. As for your career decisions at this point - I would say that rather than focusing on the quick and easy route you should focus on your interests as it won't matter how much money you make if you are not happy. Most positions that pay well require some measurable period of time and experience before it will reward you (let alone education). So I would just focus on what you like versus what pays well if you don't want to make any long term committments.

I don't understand how your parents can be divorced and not have a custody agreement that applies to you. Are they still under temporary orders? Does neither of them pay child support to the other? Unless one parent has been designated as having the right to decide where you live until you are 18, BOTH parents would need to give their consent. If you have another relative, perhaps they can approach your parents with you to talk about this issue and about letting you live with them. Your only other possible option is to research what you can do to become an emancipated minor. At that point, however, you would need to be able to financially support yourself unless the parents agree to provide for you as long as you were in school.

Living in Jacksonville, Florida?

Living in Jacksonville, Florida?
In a few months I will be graduating with my BSN and I'm thinking of relocating from Georgia to Jacksonville, FL. I went to school in Atlanta and for the most part I like the city life but wanted more of a water scenery (grew up in Baltimore). How is life in Jacksonville, FL? Is the job market strong for a nursing graduate? Is there alot to do? I know they have a sports franchise which is great because I love football. What are some good areas to live (I'm a 22 black female and will probably be living alone). Any information would be greatly appreciated. I've been to Jacksonville, FL a few times and overall I like the atmosphere. However, I still thought it would be wise to get some opinions from those who actually live in Jacksonville. Thanks in advance.

I've been living here for nearly 15 years and love it...while I currently work in Tallahassee, can't bear to move and come home every weekend instead. The nursing job market is pretty strong throughout Florida and Jacksonville has several excellent hospitals (including the Mayo Clinic.) Beside the Jaguars, Jax has quite a few other sport franchises including the Sharks (Arena football), Suns (baseball) and Axemen (rugby) plus other big events (especially the PGA TPC tournament every spring.) There is a very active music scene with frequent big-name acts hitting the various venues in the area, lots of clubs with live music and a number of big music festivals (Jax Jazz Fest, Springing the Blues, etc.) As a general rule, south and east of the St. Johns probably has the best living areas - I'd steer clear of Northside (some of the more run-down areas) and look carefully Westside (especially check traffic during rush hour - Blanding in particular can be horrendous.)

Can you live comfortably off of a teacher's salary in Jacksonville, Florida?

Can you live comfortably off of a teacher's salary in Jacksonville, Florida?
I would like to become a high school English teacher and I believe their salary ranges from $35,000-50,000. I live in Jacksonville, Florida and I was wondering if I would be capable of living comfortably as a single person with no kids on that kind of salary. I would like the luxuries of being able to go out to eat or see a movie every now and then as well as have cable and internet, but as far as rent, gas and utilities go, would I be able to afford it? All useful information is appreciated, Thank you. :)

I'm doing just fine right now. I live in the suburbs of Jacksonville, (the Clay County District), and I'm a single mom of twins, and I'm managing. You'll be able to get by fine. I also have divorce money though My best friend, who teaches at the same school as me, is 35, single, never been married (so she's supported herself on her own since college), has no kids, and seems to be doing good. She coaches a sport at our school for a little extra money, but she doesnt really need to. She does it more so to keep her busy. SHe has an apartment (since its just her she doesnt see the need to buy a full house), and its pretty nice. Nothing like NYC apartments, but its cheap, affordable, and a pretty nice place. She drives an Altima (so its not a terrible car, but not top of the line). She has nice clothes, nice shoes, can take herself to dinner or the movies a few times a week... She's doing great off of a teachers salary on her own. She doesnt live in as nice of a home as others, but its not bad, her apartments in a nice area, her car isnt amazing, but because of this she can buy herself takeout, go out to dinner, go to the movies, buy new clothes... She's not rich, she is tight on money, but living pretty comfortably. This is in a district 30 minutes outside of Jacksonville Gas is cheap, and the area isnt all to expensive. I love it over here:) My only suggestion: Work & live in the suburbs (Orange park!!, Middleburg, Greencove, Westside (a little dangerous), Southside. Its so much nicer, and safer. Email me if you have any more questions, I lived here for awhile so I can tell you about the districts and everything:)

4
Cable, phone and internet packages are available for less than $100/month. A nice apartment will probably run you around $700. Utilities are running maybe $120 a month on average (higher in summer, average in winter, lower in spring/fall) and gas is well below the US average. Also, keep in mind that Florida doesn't have a state income tax. Even on the low end of that scale, you should be able to have an occasional night out just fine.

16 year old actress from jacksonville florida?

16 year old actress from jacksonville florida?
hi everyone! before i begin i wanted everyone to know that im fully aware of the slim chances and all of the heartaches and insecurities that come along with the business. but im also fully aware that you can find those qualities in just about anything else that you do in this world so with that said im going to continue. :D im 16 and from jacksonville florida, so just by the location and my late start (i haven't had any previous training or experience with acting) that i know im getting off on a rough start but i really don't care about all that. i figure im young and if its meant to happen it will happen. if not then when im 60 years old i wont have anything to regret. so my questions are do any of you guys have any tips for me to get started? especially since i do live in jacksonville and theres not alot of acting opportunities around here. my plan was to get training this year at theatre jacksonville. get all the training i can get because i know im going to need it and then with that try to audition with some local plays. i want to try to get a few student films under my belt as well but i really dont know where to start with that. after high school (i will have money saved up) perhaps moved to los angeles with a roommate because i know how much the economy is screwed right now. and then from there hopefully i can show a local ( not a big agency) my resume and maybe after a few more years of bit parts i can get a break or something. what do you guys think? sounds okay? sorry for writing too much and thanks for any answers :D

Your plan sounds okay. I say if the economy is still bad when you are done with high school to go study theatre in college. California has a really high unemployment rate right now and when you move to LA you might not be able to get a job to support yourself there. While having a theatre degree might build your confidence (since you will have the training) and put you ahead of those who have none.

2
I am fourteen years old and have done four plays. I think that plan sounds a lot like mine except for the roommate. If you want to do it then at auditions you must NOT be shy or nervous. Just read the lines as if it were really happening to you. Don't worry about getting a late start. But get in as much practice as you can. Try reciting lines from movies you see as best as possible. Hope I helped. Good luck.

The schools (like everywhere else) vary from school district to school district). You might want to take a look at the State of Florida website where they have a ton of information on schools by district, city, ratings, etc: http://www.stateofflorida.com/Portal/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=67 Hope this helps!

A Florida school board voted late Monday night to keep the name of a Confederate general and early KKK member?

A Florida school board voted late Monday night to keep the name of a Confederate general and early KKK member?
This is so funny to me. Notice the only two to vote against the name is black. Why can't they just let it go. Talk about digging up the past. Do you think the name of the school should be changed? Honestly I had no idea who old dude was until I read the article here is a portion of it. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. รข€“ A Florida school board voted late Monday night to keep the name of a Confederate general and early Ku Klux Klan leader at a majority black high school, despite opposition from a black board member who said the school's namesake was a "terrorist and racist." After hearing about three hours of public comments, Duval County School Board members voted 5-2 to the retain the name of Nathan Bedford Forrest High School. The board's two black members cast the only votes to change the name. "(Forrest) was a terrorist and a racist," argued board member Brenda Priestly Jackson, who is black. Betty Burney, the board chairman and the board's other black member, also voted against retaining the name. "It is time to turn the page and get beyond where we are," she said. Time to turn the page? Why don't she just let it go. Why are black people intending on making everything racist. I think Malcom X and MLK were racist against white people but I guess that was okay. Why does it seem that if it racism against whites its okay but as soon as something remotely racist (really it wasn't until it was twisted around) against black or whatever other kind race all hell breaks loose. We can't help what is in the past but we can learn to get over it. The past is just that the past so I ask people to quit dwelling on slavery and the civil war its over people its a new age lets act like it.

I can understand not wanting to have the name of someone who hated your race on top of the buiding you go into every day. I think you would too if the roles were reversed. As a Northerner who moved (hopefully temporarily) to the South, I don't see this school as a unique institution. There's plenty of reminders of slavery here, some almost honored. It's very odd to me, especially since the African American population is somewhat large. I don't feel comfortable seeing all this, and I'm white.

2
You think it's bad now, I don't think it's going to improve soon. I can just imagine what tonight will bring, it won't be pretty no matter who wins. I do think though, that all this over exaggerated political correctness is going to come to an end. If Obama wins, that means that the highest office in the country is held by a "blacK" man, to me it will be hard to justify all this affirmative action crap. Maybe white folks could at least, once again, have = rights.

3
Nathan Bedford Forrest was one of the founders of the KKK. KKK being a Greek abbreviation of "The Unbroken Circle." He was involved with the KKK as a Confederate Veterans Association. Two years after it's beginnings Forrest left the KKK because of the radicals who had taken over and began spreading the violence known by the KKK. Forrest at the end of the War of Northern Aggression had written to his fellow Tennessee Vets that what ever differences were present before the war that they should be resolved and everyone treated as equal after the war. Forrest never supported violence toward anyone after the war. The name should remain with the school..

As for locations.... Orange Park is nice, but very busy (lots of traffic especially off of Blanding). Mandarin is the best area (it's just across the river from O.P.) in Jacksonville, very safe and probably closer to the schools making your commute about 20 minutes less than O.P. The zip codes in Mandarin are 32223, 32258, 32257 - to make it easier to find an apt. Another great area is Baymeadows. Avoid North or West Jacksonville, there are some not-so-safe neighborhoods. To find rental options, go to www.rent.com or www.move.com for your search. Hope this helps you, good luck with school!

To be somewhat blunt, if these are your only two choices of law school then I would seriously consider another post-graduate route because this decision is one of which is the lesser of the two evils-- both are very poor law schools (4th tier), however if I had to go to one-- it would be the one offering showing me the money. If neither where offering me money then I honestly wouldn't attend because $30K per year on tuition at these schools is far too much for the quality of education that you will receive.

I live in jacksonville. Let me just give you a heads-up. Murder and crime are rampant in the city. this is our local news. So crime is high because there aren't enough cops. www.firstcoastnews.com you can check the daily happenings here. As far as neighborhoods, stay away from the westside, northside, downtown, and orange park away. There is actually a very small area that is acceptable, and that is the beaches area. There are some neighborhoods off of a road called Hodges. there is an excellent school there called Chets Creek. This would be your best bet. Another good school is Abess Park. Another one would be Twin Lakes Academy. Sabal Palm, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach are also good. This is the school board website. http://www.dreamsbeginhere.org/ You can see the school grades and mixture of students there. Here's another school website: http://www.greatschools.net/ you can compare schools here. If you want more info you can email me.

Jacksonville is the most populous city in the state of Florida and the thirteenth most populous city in the United States. It is the county seat of Duval County.GR6 Since 1968, the city has shared a consolidated government with the county, making it the largest city in land area in the contiguous United States. In 2006, the city proper had an estimated population of 834,789 [1] with a metropolitan population of more than 1.3 million.[2] Jacksonville is the third most populated city on the East Coast, after New York City and Philadelphia. It is the central city of the Jacksonville, Florida, Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jacksonville is located in the First Coast region of northeast Florida. The city is situated on the banks of the St. Johns River, which flows north and empties into the Atlantic Ocean about 20 miles east of downtown. The settlement that became Jacksonville was founded in 1791 as Cowford due to its location at a narrow point in the river across which cattle were once driven. The city was renamed in 1822 for Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and eventual seventh President of the United States. A bronze sculpture of Jackson atop a steed stands downtown at the corner of Hogan and Water Streets. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacksonville

5
My brother lived there when he was stationed in the Navy and hated it. He described it as full of hicks - and we're talking backwoods straight out of "Deliverance" ones. They're also totally obsessed with their football team - McDonald's even named a burger after the quarterback.

6
Beach on one side. Interstate on the west side. Big rusting bridge in the middle. Lots of buildings, lots of houses, spread out really wide. Very flat. Looks like most other florida cities. FEW big buildings downtown. Mostly smaller buildings everywhere.

7
It is possibly the dullest large city in the Southern US. I cannot think of a single reason to get off of I-95 to visit it. The reason its citizens are so obsessed with their football team is that THERE IS NOTHING ELSE of interest about the place.

It would be a good idea to ask the school district if they have job openings and if they are permanent. My sister works in the Las Vegas school system and she says they are in constant need of qualified teachers, they pay exceptionally well and since the school system is growing in leaps and bounds you may want to try there.

Orange Park is probably the best. Or Fleming Island, which is pretty much the best area of Orange Park. Its about 15 minutes away, has one of the best school districts in the state (believe me, I teach at a high school in the Clay County District, and its so much nicer, safer, and smarter than the other distrcts I have taught in). Its a simple drive... straight down Park Avenue for about 15 minutes and your at the base. A ton of people who live over here are in the navy, so your husband will be near some of his coworkers most likely. I'd definitely say Orange Park is the best. I really like the area. Mandarin is nice to, but its a little bit farther away. There are a ton of community colleges, and UNF nearby If you have any other questions, feel free to email me. I know the Jacksonville area by heart.

2
I'd mainly agree with the above answer, altho the drive to Mandarin isn't necessarily too bad depending on how quickly you can get to I-295. One area I'd definitely suggest NOT considering is Argyle Forest/Middleburg or anywhere else that would require taking the Blanding Blvd. exit off I-295. That whole corridor is really nasty just about any time but during rush hour it's traffic from hell.
